The Journal of Strategic Studies
Winter 2007, Volume 3, No. 9

The 9th issue of the Journal of Strategic Studies was published in December 2007.  The Journal of Strategic Studies is a quarterly refereed journal, published in Arabic and English by the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research (BCSR), which aims to enrich scholarly research through the publication of innovative, creative and analytical studies, articles and interviews. The journal is concerned with papers and articles covering the strategic dimensions of political, economic, social, educational and scientific issues, as well as religion and the dialogue of civilizations, with a Gulf and Arab focus.  The journal has already gained wide attention and appreciation from several research centres and universities around the world.

To mark the National Day of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the editorial board of the Journal of Strategic Studies felt that it was important to obtain and publish United Nations and other documents pertaining to the independence of Bahrain during the period 1969-71, especially UN Resolutions No. 278 of 1970 and the Admission of Bahrain to the United Nations in 1971. In addition, this special issue of the journal contains other reports, the names of the permanent representatives of Bahrain to the United Nations in News York, Bahraini documents with regard to independence, and the Arab identity of Bahrain.

This issue contains more than 40 documents in Arabic and English, including references on the history of Bahrain, including Portuguese and British sources, with reference to their importance, and a bibliography of the modern history of Bahrain. The documents contained in the journal are an invaluable information resource for researchers, scholars, officials, students, and all those who wish to know more about Bahrain's independence and the role of the United Nations in this process.

The issue has a foreword by H.E. Dr. Mohammed J. K. Alghatam, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research and Editor-in-Chief of the journal, which refers to the Arab identity of Bahrain and its long historical civilization.  Dr. Alghatam points out the role of the centre in publishing information and in promoting the standard of thinking and research in Bahrain.  The Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of the journal also salutes the Bahraini people and the wise leadership for the country's accomplishments realized during the reign of H. M. King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa. May God keep him safe.

The issue also contains a note by Dr. Mohamed Noman Galal, Editor of the journal, and an introduction by H.E. Ambassador Karim Al Shakar, who was the Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations from 1987 to 1990.

The Journal of Strategic Studies was first published in 2005 and is now in its third year of publication. It has an advisory board which includes prominent thinkers and academics from China, India, Pakistan, the U.S.A., France, Egypt, the U.A.E., Syria and Bahrain.  Dr. Mohamed Noman Galal, editor of the journal, states that the journal's editorial board is keen to include material in the journal in both Arabic and English, so as to reach a wider audience of people from specialized research institutes and think tanks around the world. The journal welcomes and gives priority to contributions and studies from academics and researchers in Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf countries.
