Arab Journal of Food and Nutrition
Monday, 7th August 2006

Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research has published the latest edition of the Arab Journal of Food and Nutrition. It contains a number of studies conducted in the Arab world.

The first study discusses the Glycamic Index in some types of Saudi dates and it shows that the highest Glycamic Index was found in "Naboot Saif" and "Berhy" dates.

The second study in the journal is on breast feeding and the nutritional status of pre-school children in the Muharraq Governorate by Dr. Abdulrahman Obaid Musaiger and Dr. Shirin Muhammad Hussain. This is a first study of its kind to examine the practice of breast feeding and the health of children in the governorate of Al-Muharraq. The study revealed that the average length of breast feeding in Muharraq was 14.1 months and that the duration of breast feeding is less in mothers with higher education levels. It also showed that working women are less inclined to breast feed their children.

Another study is a comparison between obese female students and non-obese female students and the physiological capacity of the cardiovascular system and health related fitness by Dr. Osama Kamel Al-Alla from United Arab Emirates. The results of the study was that female students with a normal percentage of fat as compared to those with a high fats percentage were more flexible and strong; they could sit down for much longer and had strong muscles in the abdomen in pregnancy and strong arm muscles. The result showed a lower heart rate in female students with normal fat percentage as compared to those with a high fat percentage at all stages: both at the rest stage or after effort and after sustained physical efforts.

The journal includes a number of short studies on the clinical and nutritional characteristics of obesity and food in elderly Tunisians conducted by Hinda Almajmoosi. It was evident from this study that high obesity rates amongst women were found in  the age group 40-50 and in men from 50-60 years. Most of those affected were married (73.3%) and also belonged to the middle classes and that obesity was linked to family health history. (70%)

The Journal also contains a reference to the studies on the impact on bone density of gelatin and some aspects of food irradiation from reports by the Amman Declaration for the Promotion of Health.

The Arab Journal of Food and Nutrition is a quarterly journal issued by Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research, edited by the Assistant Secretary-General of Scientific Studies Centre, Dr. Abdulrahman Obaid Musaiger.
