A new book on Physical Activity, Obesity and Nutrition has been published by Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research (BCSR) and the Arab Centre for Nutrition. The book, written in Arabic, is authored by seven scientists from the Arab world who specialize in nutrition and physical activity, and contains 28 chapters divided into two main sections.
The first section focuses on physical activity and contains information on how physical activity relates to health, with prescriptions with regard to the physical activity needs of various groups, including children, adults, women and the elderly. The second section focuses on the misinformation about dieting, obesity, unsound dieting habits, and obesity management.
The book also contains information on the factors determining obesity in the Arab world and the translation of position statements by the American Dietetic Association and the Malaysian Society for Obesity with regard to weight management, as well as information on nutrition for athletes and sports people. Lastly, there are specific recommendations on how to overcome obesity and how to encourage physical activity in the Arab world.
The book has been edited by Dr. Abdulrahman Obaid Musaiger, Assistant Secretary-General for Scientific Studies at BCSR and Head of the Arab Centre for Nutrition, and prepared by a group of consultants from the Arab world. The book is aimed at specialists in the field of nutrition, obesity, and physical activity, and will also be used as a textbook for students specializing in physical education at universities. The book can be obtained from BCSR and will also be available from local bookshops in January 2008.
