A workshop on the peaceful use of nuclear energy is being held for the Shura Council and the Chamber of Deputies on the role of the IAEA in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and will take place on 6-7 February 2008 at the Movenpick Hotel, Bahrain. Dr. Mohammed J. K. Alghatam, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research, stated that the main focus of the workshop will be: the non-proliferation of nuclear arms treaty; the relationship between the IAEA and the non-proliferation of nuclear arms treaty (the guarantee system); regional tendencies in the Middle East and the Gulf towards nuclear energy and its uses; peaceful nuclear energy in today's world and in the GCC; and programmes on the use of nuclear energy with special emphasis on the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The workshop will introduce the historical background with regard to nuclear energy, and today's regional and international complexities. Each workshop topic will emphasize and explain the different Arab and Gulf positions and tendencies, and in particular, the Bahraini position on the issues to be raised for public debate after the deliberation of the various topics.
